Soda soft drinks up your chance of strokes

The Harvard Health Publications completed a study that identifies soda of any type as responsible for an increase risk in stroke.
Harvard Medical School

By now most of us older than 12 years have been told enough that sugar-sweetened beverages need to be reduced or removed from our diets. We’re told sugar-sweetened drinks and even juices can have too much damaging sugar.

What we haven’t given in to is that even diet sodas are included in this category for increased stroke risk. Ouch!

I don’t drink sodas too often, but from time to time I get hooked on something carbonated that really goes well with dinner. Not any more.

According to more than one study by the Nurses Health Studies that spanned almost 30 years and involving almost 200,000 men and women, the staff found a surprising increased risk in significant stroke when participants drank soda, including diet soda.

The risk was most prevelant in women although 2/3ds of the study did include women. Even yet, the 51,000+ men who participted had too few strokes to create valid conclusions for soda consumption.

Soda was clearly at the top of this no-winners list. It beat out coffee by about 10%.

For some reason this week, I’ve turned my head to read everything that comes to me. I’ve been warned and rewarned about the hazards of certain foods, but none have appeared as consistently damaging to the body as SUGAR!

I like products made with sugar, but the message is coming through loud and clear. Today there isn’t a food I can think of that hasn’t been spun to include sugar. OK…maybe oysters…if oysters exist with sugar…keep those all to yourself, but most every food has been marketed with sugar.

Here’s an ACTION ITEM…
For this week, read every label, consider every food you’re going to eat, and choose to elminate any processed sugar for just ONE WEEK.
How easy will you find this to do?

Best wishes to your good health,
Mike

Label Check: Just Say No to Hot Dog Bashing

Hey! It’s an American Tradition that is here to stay!

Dietcrushers check labels. Get ready for that cook-out this weekend by learning what’s in that package of HOT DOGS!

It’s almost common knowledge that hot dogs contain an assortment of products that somehow taste great on a bun filled with catsup, mustard, and relish.

We all have our favorite chopped vegetables, magic sauces and simmering stuff that makes a hot dog on a bun an American favorite.

How is it possible that so many Americans gobble up more than 8 billion of them during the summer months alone and tolerate the hot dog bashers! Summer is the time of the American outdoor barbecue and none would be complete without a hot dog on the grill.

Does this family food standard come in so many forms that fact checking labels is a life-saving requirement?
Or has the American Hotdog been smoked with a bad rap?

A hot dog is a sausage.
All you need is a sausage maker and the right materials to make them.
And that means you can put anything in them that you want,
and people do make sausages out of almost anything.

Even so, when you think about a hot dog and a sausage the way they are made is about all they have in common.

Hot dogs have an obvious appearance and flavor that says it’s a hot dog and not a brat wurst or a kielbasa.

Different meats can be added, but traditional hot dogs are made from seasoned ground pork and beef that is stuffed into a casing. With a little twist and a visit to the smokehouse, the hot dog is ready.

That’s very simplistic, but it’s the basic process that gets you from here to there. What happens inbetween those two points is what you need to check on.

The overwhelming interest in hot dog safety comes from the chemicals used to protect the product from food borne organisms such as botulism.
The most common are sodium nitrites which you’ll find in almost every commercially produced, mass-consumed hot dog.

The other sodium products, such as sodium diacetate and sodium erythorbate have other functions like helping to plump up the hot dog, maintaining color and increasing the cure rate.

Hot dogs can contain specific meats, but according to the USDA they can also contain up to 15% meat byproducts. Few people really consider what that means and probably don’t want to know, but imagine it this way….

Years ago a friend of mine chose to quit eating hot dogs that he helped make at a large commercial hot dog manufacturing company.
He said when an animal comes into the factory for processing, every part of it will somehow get used. The place that gets the remnants that couldn’t be used in anything else ended up on the hot dog meat pile. He used a large shovel to get these lovely pickings into the huge meat grinders that eventually turned out thousands of hot dogs every day.

That’s another place that the hot dog gets it’s bad name, because even though that’s what my friend said, it’s not completely realistic. At least it isn’t today.

The USDA Fact sheet has this requirement:

The finished products may not contain more than 30% fat or no more than 10% water, or a combination of 40% fat and added water. Up to 3.5% non-meat binders and extenders (such as nonfat dry milk, cereal, or dried whole milk) or 2% isolated soy protein may be used, but must be shown in the ingredients statement on the product’s label by its common name.
… they consist of not less than 15% of … muscle meat with raw meat byproducts.

The byproducts must also be named. So you won’t be getting heart, kidney or liver in your hot dogs unless it says it on the label.

Is there room for hot dogs in a diet filled with summer family fun? Of course, unless you’re a food purist who doesn’t eat any type of preservative or food additive.

And for the rest of us, just don’t over do it. My personal belief is, that the joy you get from a great get-together exceeds the risk you might have from one or two hot dogs during an event.

And possibly, you could make other choices that are better for you at those events. Start a new tradition…fresh, organic hot dogs or sausages are easy to make with a good recipe and the proper equipment. You just might become the star of next year’s family reunion when your new family favorite hits the grill.

Safety Tip

Cut up a hot dog before letting younger children eat them. Foods like hot dogs can easily choke children who try to swallow one whole. We all know that young children tend to do things like that just when you turn around for a second. Take care of the kids and have a super time at all your family get-togethers.

Are You Dying To Eat Cake?

Cake with chocolate-fudge-butter-cream icing is one of those warm, loving memories I have from my childhood.

There are a lot of those celebrations that involve birthday cake, wedding cake, ribbon cutting cake, graduation cake, small baby shower cakes and a hundred other special events that make cake the center of special events.

Cake warms the soul when it comes from mothers’ kitchens, delicately iced with sugary frostings, painted sugar statues, and even sugar-sparkling seasonal flowers.

And that’s where the goodness stops!
Empty Calories With Some Purpose

An average size pound cake with 1 pound each of butter and flour also contains 1 pound of sugar. Typical dessert cakes, cupcakes, brownies, doughnuts and cookies contain 1 to 3 tablespoons of sugar per serving and that’s without the icing.

Sugar is an empty calorie that has more use in baking than just adding sweetness. Sugar functions as a shortening agent to get in the way of the protein strands created by stirring up the batter. A recipe with too little sugar will have more of a bread texture than a fluffy cake appeal. Sugar can help with leavening when it’s creamed into solid fat like cool butter.

Sugar has it’s important purpose in cooking and baking and that’s why it’s often difficult to reproduce mom’s old-time, favorite recipes with lower calorie, sweetening substitutes.

MARKETING “FACTS”

A marketer’s job includes positioning a product or service in the mind of the consumer. Most often that’s positive and sometimes that involves spinning the truth into grey areas of itself. It’s not quite wrong, but it still doesn’t pass the white glove test. In September of 2010 the corn lobby group petitioned the Food and Drug Administration in the U.S. for permission to change its name. The desired change removes the damage attached to high-fructose corn syrup and replaces it with that great and super tasty product known as CORN SUGAR. So, corn sugar has been linked to high blood pressure and research indicates that corn sugar is managed differently by the body to increase diseases of the liver and create diabetes easier than table sugar.

TOXIC SUGARS

Table sugar, sucrose, is the most familiar sugar today developed and used from ancient days by travelers and traders. There are many types of sugars used in home cooking and food processing that aren’t often considered as part of the sugar quotient.

HONEY & FRUIT SUGAR

Honey is comprised of about 40% fructose, also known as fruit sugar. Mothers would give babies a little honey in milk to appease a sweet tooth. Little did they know that honey requires less digestion than table sugar, but that it also contains glucose separately. Sucrose is actually broken down into fructose and glucose during digestion, so skip a step with honey. However, fructose digestion and liver processing are put on priority. That activity reduces circulating insulin, which sounds good, but insulin decreases appetite meaning there may be a weight gain directly correlated to eating fructose.

HIGH-FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP

High-fructose corn syrup(HFCS) is getting the bad sugar rap now. It will probably move to something else which is how these things seem to get reported over the years. That doesn’t mean HFCS isn’t something to keep out of your diet. It just means it’s part of the sugar program that should be kept out of your diet.

Today, HFCS is in many, many…one more time…MANY foods that you probably have in your cupboards or refrigerator right now. It’s in so many common products that trying NOT to eat it takes effort.

GAIN WEIGHT FASTER WITH HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP

The corn industry spends millions of dollars in the U.S. each year lobbying and marketing what is considered disinformation to increase their standing with the ‘goodness of corn’ by-products. The most obnoxious assertion is that the body can’t tell the difference between HFCS and regular table sugar.

Are they expecting my body to raise a white flag surrendering to one sugar over another?

Princeton University studied the effects of HFCS on male rats. They were given the standard rat vittles, but one diet included HFCS and another diet included table sugar.

RESULT

The HFCS diet group gained much more weight than the rats who dined on the standard diet sweetened with table sugar.

IMPORTANT PART OF THE TEST

The sugar concentrations used weren’t the same. The table sugar diet used sugar amounts similar to that found in servings of sodas.
The HFCS diet used amounts that were only HALF what is found in sodas containing HFCS.

High Fructose corn syrup isn’t just the processed sugar from corn. It has other enzymes and products added to it in order to create a thick syrup that’s many times more sweet than table sugar.
It’s financially cheaper to use HFCS than table sugar.

I think my body can tell the difference and it’s saying don’t feed that stuff to me!

Too often we’re told that an additive in our food is just a small amount to help in growing, processing, transporting and storage. Add it all up. Bathe in it for years and do those small amounts become toxic substances that accelerate aging? create disease?

SMALL AMOUNTS BECOME PROBLEM MOUNTAINS

How much table sugar, fruit sugar, and high-fructose corn syrup sugar do you eat in a year?

What do you think?
Can you estimate the total sugar you eat or drink or slurp in candies, cookies, bites of crispy chips and the occasional dessert?

Better Than Chips – Kale Crisps

One of the hottest, make-at-home, healthy junk food replacement recipes
going around today are recipes for KALE CRISPS.

Kids who don’t like kale in salads, love kale crisps. It takes a little finesse to get them just right, but I have a tip in my recipe that should get you to perfect the first time.

Have you tried them yet? Now is definitely the time, because this little option will become a fast replacement for those potato chips and crunchy do-dangs that add the fat pounds from across the room.

Recipe: Kale Crisps – Better than Potato Chips

Summary: Great tasting, healthy and crunchy snack

Ingredients

  • 2 heads kale
  • 2 T olive oil
  • Sea salt grinder
  • Favorite spices
  • (Small clean & dry spray bottle)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 300F
  2. Pull apart the kale leaves.
  3. Wash well and pat dry with paper towels.
  4. Remove the thick ribs on bigger leaves.
  5. Cut into 2″ to 3″ pieces.
  6. Put the olive oil into the spray bottle.
  7. Lightly mist the leaves.
  8. Place evenly on baking sheets.
  9. Sprinkle lightly with salt and one or two favorite spices.
  10. Bake in oven for about 10 minutes.
  11. Turn leaves over and bake another 10 minutes or until crisp.

Quick notes

Be sure there are no water drops or those spots won’t crisp up.

The oil will lightly fry the leaves, so wherever it doesn’t reach, the kale will dry out. Keep things light. Too much oil will make the leaves soggy.

Variations

For your first try I suggest leaving the spices off. Some spices don’t heat well. Others are too strong, but after you discover just how good these are, you’ll find a little spice goes a long way.
I have lightly sprayed on Bragg’s Aminos and the flavor is great. I like a little turmeric, paprika and fennel. You can reduce the oven to 275F and leave them in a little longer for more fragile spices, but this stuff is really good.

Like A Movie Star

“The acting industry is about saying NO.“
Years ago Sandra Bullock said “The acting industry is about saying NO.“ The actual comment has been pushed around the internet so much that just what she said gets argued over and over.

What I got from her comment was that she had the ability to say NO to many temptations that the average person doesn’t resist. That’s because people making millions of dollars for work the rest of us consider easier than the common day job, have their MOST COMPELLING WHY!

Are they driven more to keep the security and comfort that those high-paying acting jobs provide, or

are they driven more to remain as far from their on-the-streets, poor-house past lives?

It’s said that people strive to avoid loss more than they move toward gain.

What would you want to avoid losing more than anything when it comes to weight loss or getting fit?

I’ve watched people gain so much weight that their knees can’t take the strain, so they end up in wheel chairs or bedridden. Some people who develop type II diabetes struggle to stay away from sweets and breads that in time can actually kill.

Did they know this was the future waiting for them as they made those choices?
In many cases, the answer is yes. That doesn’t make past choices wrong and in no way do I want this to appear as a condemnation, because we’ve all resisted change sufficiently to lose a gift waiting at the end of the finish line.

Many of the problems that extra weight brings on can be reversed, but the longer they remain, the more difficult it becomes. People lose hope in believing that major change can happen in their lives when they have tried unsuccessfully to make new choices. And as aches and pains set in, exercising gives way to the comfort foods can bring.

To some people I’m going down a road they wouldn’t travel, but real change and great successes don’t come by listening to those people.

Try long enough, persist long enough and success is yours.
Will it be easy? Maybe. Probably not, but that’s part of your approach to how you want to change. Either fight it at every turn or decide to roll with the punches.

Is the effort worthwhile to make that change? YES
Who would have thought that your health and future quality of life might be sitting in the next bite you take. That certainly is dramatic, but in the scheme of health today, it’s true.

Make a better choice today than you did yesterday.
And while you’re at it, eat like a movie star. Just say NO to unending temptations that rob you of the excellent future waiting for you.

Cheers to your weight loss success,

Mike

Can I Train My Brain to Crave A Healthy Diet?

happy children

Do the words pizza, chocolate and ice cream get you salivating enough to run to the store?

There are times I think of trigger foods like that, and I’m heading to the kitchen faster than Pavlov’s dog.

My downfall in the quest to obtain a perfect physique has been pizza, chocolate and ice cream. I have eaten salads all day. Felt proud of my food choices and exercised like a champion, only to undue all that effort by giving in to cravings.

Feeding a craving is a subconscious move for me to avoid the stress and difficult decisions in my life. That might not be true for everyone, but it certainly is for me. I can deliberately tell myself to keep doing the tough stuff in my business and the moment I get lost in thought, I’ll find myself hunting through the cupboards.

How can I train my brain to put me on a healthy automatic pilot?

I already eat more vegetables than the average human eats. That doesn’t mean I don’t choose enough junk. I’m a realist about how to get out of shape, but training my brain to crave healthy foods is an unbelievable goal to get me on a healthy automatic pilot.pizza

I Am told that my brain is ‘wired’ from prehistoric times, and that makes me crave chocolate cake when I pass by a bakery. Is this really where experts need to get justifications for their claims?

Although there may be something analogous to a drug addict craving the stuff again while passing a crack house next to the rehab center. However, the caveman analogy for how I act in life has never been reliable to me.

It simply appears like an obvious ‘fact,’ when it’s more like an obvious assumption.

I do know that I crave chocolate cake on a plate in front of me, because my mother baked me the best chocolate cake for my eighth birthday. I can still smell and taste the homemade-butter-cream-chocolate-fudge frosting. I can still see the huge piece in front of me while everyone at the table sang Happy Birthday to me.

While I’m thinking of it, I’d sure like a piece, but today I’m investigating how to train my brain to put me on a healthy diet.

How possible is that to actually reprogram my cravings to help me desire healthier foods?

According to CNN’s Elizabeth Cohen, there are three steps toward ‘switching your cravings.’

1. Clean Out Your Cupboards
For those of us who have yo-yo dieted, clean cupboards isn’t the biggest problem. Getting all those trigger foods out of the house is the first thing to do.

2. Carry Around Healthy foods
I don’t carry food around in my car, because even though I have cravings while driving, I don’t stop to fill them. Maybe I’m different about this, but my biggest problem area is at home. I can control myself eating out a lot better than I control myself at home. That’s why Item #1 is so important, because one high-fiber cereal box in the hand is equal to one empty box in the garbage. There’s just no need to carry food around with me.

3. Bury Craved Foods In The Middle of A Meal
Cohen quotes the subject in her articles to suggest that dieters avoid eating unhealthy craved foods for the first two weeks of a diet. The purpose is to unlearn the craving. After two weeks she allows a 100 calorie of the trigger food in the middle of the meal.

I’ll try one this on my upcoming 6 Week Body Makeover. Whatever you’re craving, put it in the middle of your meal, so it’s not the food of the meal linked to a benefit of eating. She says that putting a trigger food like chocolate at the beginning of a meal makes your mind link the good feelings you get with that first taste. Conversely, by having it for dessert or at the end, you’ll link that trigger chocolate as the best thing you ate.

Manipulating cravings of all types has been studied for hundreds of years in different disciplines from Philosophy to Psychology to Behavorial Therapists to Genetic Engineers. Possibly my caveman alter-ego craved chocolate cake for his 8th birthday, but that stuff is so old by now, I think I’ll look for more modern reasons for controlling my cravings.

Before During and After Diet

I LOVE WATER

I love to drink cool, clear, crisp refreshing water.
I love to swim in clean water. I love the rain.

WATER is an amazing gift to me

Some people like fresh air. That’s nice, too.
I’ve seen babies eat dirt like I could eat chocolate cake.
Good for them!
Smore’s on a campfire make stories worth telling…
But I LOVE WATER!

You may, too, whether this next article is a reminder of something worth trying
or you’re learning something new about —

How you can lose extra fat with WATER!

A few years ago the Dallas news station WFAA-TV Channel 8 teased the local population for a while about a man who lost 50 pounds on the WATER DIET. Up came the pictures that showed Jeff Schmidt able to wrap his old fat man shirt around his skinny body.

And how did he do it?

With glasses of H20.

The article writer, Janet St. James, is one of Dallas’ beloved reporters. She has a lot of honors and journalism awards, but she’s also beautiful, trim and fit. I think that helps in journalism. She appeared quite interested in the Water Diet by Jeff Schmidt.

And so was I.

Read the basics, and then you can click on the link below to look at the video by Janet St. James about Jeff Schmidt. (I hope that was enough press on the characters.)

HERE IS THE DIET:

Drink one glass of water
BEFORE A MEAL

Drink one glass of water
DURING A MEAL

Drink one glass of water
AFTER A MEAL

One of the experts the writer located about healthy dieting says that dieters can lose an extra 500 calories a day by using the Before, During, and After methods that Jeff attributes to his 50 pound weight loss.

Believe it or not, Jeff had lap band surgery scheduled two years prior, but canceled that surgery to give this diet the drink test. And as of the report, Jeff had kept the weight off. WAY TO GO, JEFF.

Is this simple or what? I was looking for the catch or the list of do’s and don’t do’s, but there weren’t any.

So keep it simple. Check it out to see if this might be something you can add into the daily routine that might just help you get a sharper edge.

For those of you who need to make this more complicated, here is something to consider….
Water dilutes the stomach acids, so foods don’t digest as everyone would like.
There are food purists and food combiners who suggest that a water diet like this isn’t the thing to do.
For them, they are 100% correct.

For me, I find it is more important for me to take the fat off now, than how slow my digestion may become. Then again I have outstanding digestion….

I’m keeping it simple, so while you were reading, I got a big helping of purified water. Not from my new water hand pump filter yet…..told you that’s still on my list, but from a pitcher filter that creates still better tasting water than tap water.

Here’s the link to the WFAA news station water article…(let me know if it ever goes down.)
And let me know what you think of this WATER DIET, because I LOVE WATER.

What Were They Thinking!

What Were They Thinking? It's A SHAKE

What Were They Thinking?

It looks great!
And it tastes great!

This summertime, hot-weather, ice cream treat weighs in at a whopping

1520 Calories

670 of those tempting tastebud calories are from FAT!
And for all you cholesterol and carb counters, have no worries. It’s all in there, too. The 175g of sugar might make this a great starter for holiday candy.

There are 31 g of dairy protein and an entire day’s supply of calcium to help anyone claim this is healthy. Just admit that snowballs are melting in hell first.

I understand a treat for the kids and a larger one for an adult, but this one 32 oz ice cream shake is equal to an entire one-day supply of calories.

Pass this information on to the hard-gainers in the gym who need some of what this has.

What were they thinking?
A few years ago Baskin Robbins was given credit for the all time worst food in America by serving a similar Chocolate Oreo Shake that tipped the scales at 2,600 calories!

I like Baskin Robbins, but a good size cone with a couple of flavors of ice cream are a good enough portion.

It’s tasty.
It’s big.
And once over the lips means a week of dieting to take it off!

Portions – How Much Food is in 200 Calories

Spend Your Food Portions Just Like CASH!

All those diets that say you can
eat anything you want and still lose weight,
neglect to show you something important up front.

1 OUNCE

How would you like a 200 calorie serving of cheesecake?
Or a 200 calorie serving of french fries?

Two hundred calories can sound like a lot of food, but with a high fat food like cheesecake or french fries, get ready to fill up on 1 OUNCE!

Cheesecake Factory Adams Fudge Ripple
One twelfth of this 10″ cheesecake is 1330 calories. A celebration can make this indulgence worth it at the time, but will you still vote yes a week later when the scale has something to say about it?

A tablespoon or two of cheesecake can easily fit into a diet. Just remember it’s still 200 calories. When diet creep turns 2 tablespoons into a regular commercial size slice as dessert of the week, it’s easy to see fast weight gain.

2 POUNDS

Although you might think a 200 calorie salad of chopped celery would be a nice side to your entree, you might need to take most of the day to chew on more than 2 POUNDS!
It has fiber. It has nutrients you need. It has high water content and it can be refreshing, but don’t call me for dinner when 200 calories of celery is a diet selection.

Making healthy choices is important for your success. You do have choice when it comes to the foods you eat that will help you lose weight. You have a lot more control than you think and part of the control means you make your desires and cravings listen to what you want that’s best for your future self just a few months down the road.

Allocate 200 Calorie Food Units Each Day

When a diet is assembled of two hundred calorie foods, it’s easy to count up how many items you get each day.
The average 2000 calorie daily diet would allow 10 foods.
Adjust the daily calorie limit for your particular size and weight loss goals.

However, with ten 200 calorie foods per day, you can spend these portions on 1 oz of french fries. Or use one chopped french fry as a crispy topping for 1 pound of steamed celery. That may be simplistic, but that’s the start of watching a diet through portion control using the foods that you enjoy most.

Wise food choices don’t stop at calories. Of course, it’s important to get enough protein and even good fats, but getting accustomed to just what a 200 calorie food portion is, makes a great start to losing that extra fat.

Bodybuilding is much like any other sport. To be successful, you must dedicate yourself 100% to your training, diet and mental approach.Arnold Schwarzenegger

Allocating 200 calorie food portions each day is like having your own mini-diet-training program. Knowing just how many 200 calorie food portions you need to loose weight and to maintain your current weight helps you to make wise decisions at restaurants and tempting buffets.

Creating your own 200 calorie food portions and sticking with just those items is a tradeoff. You bargain with yourself.

Somewhere down the road a decision must be made to make cravings and desires be obedient to what you know you really want. That part isn’t easy for anyone.

I used to question why very well built men and women had it so easy. After all, they looked amazing, had great health and stamina, and they never seemed to be out of control with a diet.

HERE’S THE SURPRISE!
In all the years I went to a gym and got into that conversation with a well-built man or woman, not once did I hear that it was easy for that person. To the contrary, I heard the identical statements every heavy, fat, or obese person makes.

“It’s hard to control my cravings. ”
“Sometimes I don’t and I just dig in.”
“I work out hard and then on a bad day I give in to temptation.”

What was the difference?
The bodybuilder had a compelling WHY! so strong that he or she got back on track faster than the obese person.

If you haven’t signed up for the ebook below, get it now. It’s FREE and easy to read in about 10 minutes. It explains how to get that compelling WHY!

Having a compelling WHY! is like having the gas in a clean car with the roadway clearly marked ahead. You still need to guide it down the road and make the journey, but the destination becomes worth the price.

Cheers to health and weight loss success,
Mike

Nature’s Viagra – Watermelon

natures viagra

A few years ago when news first appeared that watermelon was nature’s viagra, no summer BBQ was safe!

As news traveled fast that season, watermelon was in short supply.

The new fruity truth must be long lasting, because watermelon sales are way, way up along with the prices and the temperatures. This has been a summer to remember, so to make the most of it, be sure to eat the RIND.

That’s where most of the amino acid citrulline exists in watermelon.
And as though anything else matters,

Citrulline is converted into Arginine that is a precursor to Nitric oxide which dilates blood vessels and makes the magic happen.

Before you run out to buy the largest watermelon on record, there isn’t enough information on just how much Citrulline is needed to see an effect.

How Clutter Makes You Fat

How Clutter Makes You Fat –

Clutter has a sound. Imagine all those unfinished tasks calling out short reminders that build into a stressful noise.

You can get accustomed to the noise, but the stress it creates is at work 24 hours a day. It’s easy to prove.

How I Started To DeClutter

: Destress My Bedroom

Make your bed – 5 minutes
Clear up the floor – 5 minutes
Vacuum – 5 minutes

Time this. Spend 15 minutes and stop.

Some people start with something smaller in another room.
I started with my bedroom, because I was doing something for myself.
I cleaned clean up the floor in the bedroom so I stopped all that noise calling me while I was sleeping.

That might sound funny, but once this was straightened up, anytime I woke up at night, I felt more calm and at peace. My mind wasn’t racing around the bedroom figuring out what needed to be done, when and how.

Declutter your bedroom and will notice a calmer difference you don’t get from cleaning clutter in any other room.

Notes:

When it takes more than 5 minutes to make your bed, then simplify. Make your bed only with what you use to sleep and put away all the other items that are for show. Extra decorative pillows and a bed full of plush animals is clutter.

I cleaned up my bedroom years ago, when I was having a tough time making a major life decision. Later that night when it was time for sleep, I slid into bed and let the world disappear. It felt like a clean hotel room where I had no cares in the world.

Clutter is an Outward Expression of The Inner

It’s one of the easiest ways to change yourself and remove stress once you get the desire to finish the job.
As I cleaned up my bedroom until everything had it’s place, I found a comfortable place to rest. Stress left me and I was able to straighten up the other areas of my home. I mean I straightened the big, leave-’em-alone areas like the garage and the office.

It gave me a tremendous feeling of accomplishment and control over my life. And the need to eat well and get back in shape grew in me. Every day I had my most compelling WHY! and a new found determination appeared. I was taking action.

Habit Of Success

I wish I could say it was easy to keep up with it all. It wasn’t, but I made a commitment to myself.
Whatever I accomplished, needed to remain priority, so I did that everyday to set a habit of success.
When I missed anything or cluttered up an area for more than a day, I kept that area clean before adding anything else on top of it. That habit of success felt incredible and I established a firm pattern.

I wasn’t always living in clutter, but I wasn’t always fat.
There are times in my life I was immaculate. Why was it so hard to remain immaculate now?
Analyzing things didn’t make any difference, so I went looking for answers.

Cleaning up my bedroom made things easy to accomplish all over the house.
I know this all makes it seem so easy and for some people it is. For others, letting go of all the accumulated stuff isn’t something they can do.

Heat Wave – Perfect Time To Eat Lite

Heat Wave Diet
When the weather gets hot in your corner of the world, you’ve got the perfect excuse to eat healthy foods more than any other time of year.

You can get an instant energy lift by eating lighter.
Eating lighter makes you feel cooler partly because your body isn’t weighed down with all those heavy, hard-to-digest foods.

Of course, you knew this:

WATER is #1 on the list

I’m drinking more than twice the amount of water I normally drink in order to stay hydrated. I get a great feeling by sweating and then replacing that lost water with good, fresh, cool water. Good, pure water is worth paying extra to get, but delivery companies don’t always deliver what they say they will deliver. Plastic seeps into the water. Unfiltered municipal water supplies have been used which is the identical thing you can get from your tap. Simple filtration does little more than what you can do on your own. And water lines get cleaned with benzene and iso alcohol. Check out your water source before you purchase, especially when buying by a contract.

I bought a filtering water pitcher for the refrigerator. It uses straight tap water and the activated carbon filter clears out a few things from the water, so it tastes a lot better. Activated carbon can remove some contaminants , but it doesn’t do the heavy lifting job that a small micron filter can do.

Migraines

Nobody in my family had migraines, so it was a surprise when my brother had them. An alternative therapist told him to drink a lot of extra water. He was dehydrated without knowing it. He drank extra water every 15 minutes. He carried a water bottle with him everywhere and in 3 days his migraines went away. I wish this was the solution for everyone who has migraines.

Those can even remove viruses and some manufacturers legally can state they purify the water! That’s a legal term. Great water doesn’t come from just any source.

Little did I know that the survival industry has that together a lot better than anyone else. My birthday is coming up, so instead of a refrigerator pitcher, I’d like to get a hand held filter bottle that can go anywhere. They cost a little, but
it’s a little odd that I’ll eat junk food, let myself breathe around smokers, but I want water that is 100% pure. Go figure. Maybe it’s the heat wave.

Whether I do get that or not, I’m always looking for really great ways to easily get great, pure water. That’s me, so send me any better ideas you have. I’ll be happy to post them later on.

Good Rule Of Thumb – 1 Cup Every 15 Min
A sweaty workout rule of thumb is to drink at least one cup water every 15 minutes.
Aim for 1 to 2 gallons per day. Plan ahead. You control the water quality by bringing a bottle with you. When I go to the gym, I don’t like drinking from the water fountain. At the restaurant, I give in.

In sweltering weather this is a great rule to keep in mind. When things get too hot you can get dehydrated without knowing it. You may not even feel thirsty. Your sweat evaporates too fast. A headache in hot weather is often a first sign of dehydration, so take care of yourself and push the water to avoid getting dehydrated.

Drinking more water causes your body to release extra water weight, too. Good water makes a body run better.

Eat Less

The more food you eat makes your body generate more heat to process it. That’s what a calorie is all about.

Make A Big Chopped Salad

1. Chop your favorite vegetables into equal 1/4″ bits
2. Place in cool salad bowl.
3. Top it with cold, grilled salmon or cooked and cold, sliced chicken breast.
4. Skip the high fat dressings
5. Mix and toss with two parts apple cider vinegar, 1 part olive oil.
Sprinkle with one or two of your favorite seasonings. Enjoy with someone you love.

It’s low in calories. High in protein and healthy vegetables.
And it has great cooling power.

Heat Up Your Love Life With Summer Fruits

Varieties of summer berries and watermelon grow almost everywhere in the heat and are great healthy snacks that do a lot more good than sugary harm. Eat them fresh. Or mash them into ice cube trays topped with a Popsicle stick. Or turn them into blended drinks with fruit and ginger ale. All those antioxidants and extra vitamin K will do your body good. Keep them healthy and eat them cold!

Just a few years ago watermelon was advertised as the fruit kingdom replacement to viagra! Surprisingly, watermelon contains some important amino acids and vitamins in good enough quantities to make the difference noticeable. Be sure to juice or eat that rind, because that’s where there is more of the celebrated amino acid, l-citrulline, that is known to help the cause. When this first was marketed during watermelon harvest, watermelons went into short supply.

Cool Down With Green Vegetables

Green vegetables have fiber, so they give an extra feeling of fullness without the fat.
They are high in an array of vitamins and minerals that give the body just what it needs to fend off disease and rebuild in a healthy way. When in doubt, eat salad! And make it extra green!

Are you at a diet plateau or about to give into a binge. Hang on and find the green vegetables you like most that mixes with a light version of your favorite high fat dressing. Push through it for one more day and these magical vegetables can put you back on track. Why? Because they are naturally low in everything bad for you! Almost every vegetable is low in carbs and fat, and high in fiber. Each comes packaged with its special nutrient that makes that particular vegetable more worthy than the next. Many, like cucumbers, celery, and carrots are filled with extra water, so just by loading up on great vegetables, you’re giving your body a health rest for a few hours. What’s the noticeable benefit to you? More energy! And a super feeling that you just crushed through a craving attack by hanging on for one more day.

Salt – Put Away The Shaker

Few of us have a hard time getting enough salt. It’s added into most every prepared food in high amounts.
Become a label reader. Add up all the sodium that gets into a daily diet with just a few extra processed foods.
A 2000 calorie average daily diet allows 2400mg of sodium.
1/4 teaspoon salt = 600 mg of sodium.
It’s easy to sprinkle on more than a day’s maximum suggested amount of sodium throughout the day plus extra included in prepared products. Sodium is difficult to keep out of a meal.

and…Don’t Forget The Pets

Pets need extra water, too, when it gets extra hot.

R & D the Local Health Food Store

I just arrived home from the health food store after price checking a few nutritional products. Prices seem to be just as high as ever.
Whenever possible, I like to support my local businesses, but there are times when I expect it back from them and it doesn’t come.

The local prices are so high, that I use the local, high quality health food stores primarily for research and testing.
I research a product online and then will often buy one at the local health food store to try. When I find a good one, I then go online to price check and most often I find a great savings even with shipping charges added.

A men’s nutritional support product called Prosta-Strong is very effective. The local store sells the bright green bottle for almost $25.00. I learned about this product from the local store when an old man walked up to me as I gazed over the men’s prostate support section that had more than 20 different brands! He said he was able to avoid surgery with these products, so I tried it.

Online I bought it for $10 less per bottle! I bought a few extra and saved shipping. That savings is too much for me to not support myself more than the local businesses.

Not Only Prices Up

The prices of the yearly diet magazine cover products rises significantly just like your high school economics teacher said they would.

About 10 years ago, I discovered a product that supposedly was had similar muscle building as testosterone steroids. Would it make me stronger and help me in the gym? I found a bottle of it on a GNC shelf. It sold for about $3.25 for 120 tablets.

Little did I know or did anyone at the time, that I was taking the herbal equivalent to Viagra. After Viagra became popular, this product called, Yohimbe, sold for $25 for the same bottle size of 120 tablets at the same GNC store. I never noticed the Viagra effect with Yohimbe, but I did notice my blood pressure go sky high until I quit taking it.

Great Products Exist, But Take 10% Off First

Really useful products do exist, but take off 10% of your extra weight before buying into these products.
You may wait just long enough for the dietless, lose-the-fat vaccine comes out.

Over the years there has been a new, super, better and faster muscle or diet compound every year. It’s what the industries rely on.

The newest protein products used to be hyped every year. And yet here we remain with the king of protein considered to be whey or egg protein.

HMB was pushed as the magic product in the early 2000’s. Last year it made a renewed surge as the thing to prevent protein breakdown and enhance muscle growth. It’s used in senior adult nutrition drinks.

Creatine has gone through strange hype. I had someone tell me I would die from it, because studies proved it was harmful. This was four years ago. Today creatine is advertised as a matter-of-fact component to bodybuilding. It is considered to be the most studied supplement and it’s considered safe.

In 2010 Bob Cicherillo of bodybuilding.com ran a bogus product test. He created an ad that sold Helium Creatine – the new, in-the-works breakthough formula. Almost 900 people tried to buy it before he confessed to the intentional fake report.

Was this a fair test? Not really. He already had loyal followers and bodybuilding.com was already considered a trustworthy source. However, the valid point is that people will blindly follow who they trust in the hope of an easier method.

The Day Is Here – Time To Start

THE FACTS

When it comes to fat loss and getting the body of your dreams there’s nothing like right now to stand up and face the facts.

There may be legitimate reasons why you haven’t become trim and fit, but right now the time has come to reach a new goal.

Facing facts …

WHY Do You Want To Take Off Weight!

To reach a new goal, personal CHANGE is a requirement.

Does that sound obvious?
This change also needs an acknowledged, plan of action to reach the goal.

Like the many times people try to take off weight and then put on more, they forget the goal when they don’t have a plan. They forget their most compelling WHY! that keeps them trying. And without a strong enough reason to keep an eye on the prize, then the instant gratification of the moment will too strong enough to deny.
How much do you really want this? Are you waiting for the next guru on the mountain to teach you a new motivating phrase, or have you heard enough of those and you’re ready to start?
Willing to CHANGE and accepting what you need to do to CHANGE, is the crossroad that keeps people from reaching their fat loss goals.

Earning lasting change comes by taking massive action.

Any great thing that is worth having takes deliberate action. It requires massive action to have it quickly and to do well. I learned that from my real estate investment mentor and then applied it to my fitness goals.

This doesn’t mean you create unrealistic expectations that only Superman could attain.
Being kind to yourself is part of the weight loss goal.

Determining what that massive action is for you is personal. Not everyone can exercise like a bodybuilding champ. Not everyone can eat fresh and raw fruits and vegetables and not let the stresses of life derail them.

Reaching your fitness and weight loss goals has nothing to do with beating yourself with a stick to make yourself do what you haven’t accomplished for a long time. It’s the opposite, but putting realistic demands on yourself that stretch you just past your current reach. Find that. Then take massive action and you’re on your way.

A Simple Plan

There are rules in life that can’t be broken in order to make things work.
In getting fit and losing fat the basics are below.
Keep them simple.

Vegetable Plate
Eat good food
Drink pure water
Get adequate sleep
Breathe clean air
Put order in your life

Keep it simple.
Get the basics down and then look for all those pills and powders
that promise miraculous results by sleeping your fat away.

WHY Do You Want To Take Off Weight!

Get your most compelling WHY! to stay at it long enough. Learn the simple steps and success is yours.

Why Wait 30 Days Before Taking Bodybuilding Supplements?

More than 60% of the American population is considered overweight. More than half that group is considered obese. Obesity is weight greater than 20% above normal body weight.

Increasing obesity and overweight populations are a global problem not just an American or Canadian problem.

Overweight people eat fewer fresh fruits and vegetables.
Overweight people exercise less or not at all.

This information isn’t a surprise, but it is significant when it comes to taking bodybuilding supplements. Expensive, specialized diet and bodybuilding supplements aren’t worth buying for a dieter trying to lose a lot of fat.

Some products are excellent and in time can be helpful to

  • Put on muscle
  • Accelerate fat loss
  • Increase endurance
  • Reduce muscle loss during building
  • Give a real edge to exercise.

But the reason obese dieters won’t receive much benefit from bodybuilding supplements is because the results are only an edge!

No person can take supplements, lay down for the day and expect to lose fat.
Even steroids won’t pack on the muscle, while a person sleeps. All the amped up articles about super-to-the-max-ultimate-juiced-and-freaky-special-sauce won’t change the known universe in dieting, fat loss, and muscle gains.

There are absolutely worthwhile and good products on the market that can help you make significant gains.
For the person who has a lot of fat loss to achieve, adding these wonder products into the mix is a waste of money, before the diet and routine is solidly in place. I’ve met solid and massive bodybuilders who critique these products by explaining how they affect their bodies. It’s amazing that a guy can say he is so in tune with his body that he can tell the difference in how the top brands work on him.

That is a sensitive man!

Building muscle and taking off the fat takes work even with products that produce an edge.
What’s the message here? Do what needs to be done in a healthy way in order to create your remarkable body.

It can happen. Find your most compelling WHY! to keep you focused and on track, exercise and diet with the basics and you must succeed.

Changes First

Here is a common scenario when someone starts exercising and watching food choices on a diet:

Exercising on a modified diet to lose fat isn’t the easiest choice in the world. After an hour of that workout, a person gets more hungry than any time in the day. It’s recommended to have a good protein after a a muscle workout, but that permission easily grows into calorie creep. Left unchecked, that calorie creep replaces the calories lost during workout. The exercise definitely had benefit, but there was there was no fat lost.

No bodybuilding supplement that fine tunes a workout or helps accelerate an ounce or two of fat loss will show significant results.
So, make the tough choices and changes now to put you into the routine you need.

Get more on automatic with the basics instead of relying on minimal help from muscle building product promises that won’t have much to show you yet.

Get In The Routine Next

In order to take off fat you need to create a routine that makes use of the change you know you need to make.

That’s why I recommend you follow the basics until you take off at least 10% of the extra weight you want to lose.
Of course, the larger you are, the more time you need to take off that 10%, but the average person can do that in a month to 6 weeks.

Give Me a Month Then Decide

Two of the most popular bodybuilding supplements are HMB and Creatine.

HMB bodybuilding supplement

HMB

  • Helps prevent highly trained muscle from protein breakdown
  • Assists in muscle repair,
  • Supports increased endurance.
Documented in the Journal of Applied Physiology
bodybuilder creatine

Creatine

  • Hydrates muscle
  • Increases strength
  • Promotes muscle repair for growth

I used HMB & Creatine when I was at my peak working out. They are great products and I recommend them, but not when you’re starting out a diet for fat loss. I had some guys tell me this in the gym, but I wouldn’t listen.

These are easy products to feel attached to using. I had a noticeable increase in strength with creatine, but I was already a big muscled guy. Even so, I still had a soft, thick layer of fat on me. And contrary to some hulky bodybuilder articles, I could stop taking creatine for two weeks, then start it again, and over a weekend I would put on 10 pounds of water!

One ‘expert’ says this can only happen with cheap creatine that is filled with sodium. That wasn’t the case with me. I purchased the top name brand and I duplicated this 10 pound water weight gain on demand. When you’re working to take off weight, a water weight increase can derail your attempts quickly.

HMB claims are incredible, but the obese person who isn’t on a heavy lifting workout routine will notice few, if any, benefits.

These products, and other popular bodybuilding supplements are good, but the results during fat loss don’t justify the costs. Stick with the DietCrushers Basics for a month and then come back to see if these are products you want to add to your routine.
